Well, while I’m trying to get back into the swing of things, I thought I would share this cute church outfit I made for Hunter earlier this year.
The pants and shirt were made from things the hubs had grown out of, so my only cost was thread. 🙂 I like those kinds of projects! I did use patterns, so technically if you consider that a cost, I did spend something, but I don’t usually factor that in since I can get so much use out of it. Although, if I could always find things to upcycle, it would take quite a while before my materials ever equal the cost of the patterns themselves, so really I think it pays for itself in that regard.
The patterns I used are from Peekaboo Pattern Shop. I am an affiliate, but I became one after I had already fallen in love with them and realized she had an affiliate program. So as much as I rave about them, they totally live up to that expectation and its just an expression of how much their patterns rock! The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and she’s always quick to reply if you have a problem or a question. The Peekaboo Pattern Facebook Group is great too for any range of questions you might have from what type of fabrics will work, custom alterations, etc.
So the patterns themselves are the Classic Oxford with the short sleeve option, and the Classic Chinos with welt pockets. I know what you’re thinking, darts and welt pockets? Come on that’s not easy! Trust me, I’m somewhat of a newbie at clothing making, but Amy practically holds your hand through each step. I’d NEVER sewn a dart or welt, and think I did a pretty good job on both. I did get a tiny wrinkle on one of my pockets, but for a first attempt I can’t complain. 🙂 I really must advise your seams in some way though. French seams, a zig zap, serger, or other technique should be fine! These fabrics just tend to fray, which can make quite the mess on the inside. It’s only visible to you, but drives me crazy personally. I hate working on a project and then having a rats nest of fraying threads on the inside. (By the way, the staining on the front is just dirt, because I do have boys and they are magnets to all things dirty and within 2 seconds he’d found a place to squat down and get his pants dirty! It did wash out though. Phew!)
I couldn’t get a good picture of it since his pockets are so little, but I used a scrap of batman fabric for the pocket lining for a fun hidden surprise. Truly, the little personal touches you can add to your kids clothes is my favorite part of sewing for them. This outfit is getting a wee bit small, so I think some new things are in order! I also have some blue corduroy and fun plaid button down shirts I’m hoping to use for the boys’ fall wardrobes if I can get to all of them!
I just have to share this picture too… I told him I needed to get a picture of his hiney and this is what he did… I also have to point out that I just pulled out the camera and he started posing for me. Grabbed the shovel and everything. This kid was born to model. Lucky for me, eh? 😉
I love being able to use something that doesn’t fit anymore to make something new for my kiddos, especially when no one can tell it was homemade! What are some upcycle projects you’ve done?
